Paris and Adrian, Part Deux?

Well, well, well. What do we have here? That overly bronzed back belongs to none other than Paris Hilton, and she's hugging Adrian Grenier at the premiere of The Hottie and the Nottie. Adrian's show of support for P's new flick comes just days after they were spotted having a cozy, paparazzi-free dinner at the Phoenician in Phoenix.

Just to refresh your memory, these two were hanging out a while back, working on a "documentary," and they had everyone guessing what was going on between them. They frolicked on the beach in Malibu, hit art galleries and eco-movie premieres and hung out late at night, while Adrian claimed they were just friends. And then the friendship (and photo ops) seemed to fizzle.

What to make of this new development? Well, if you've seen the previews for the movie, you so know Adrian wasn't there to see the flick. According to Reel Girl, it's painful to sit through. And it's not like this is one of those A-list, serious actor premieres in which stars who aren't associated show up, hoping to seem equally important.

So, Adrian's appearance at the screening, coupled with their dinner date à deux, makes me think something's up with these two again. What about you? Sound off in the poll.

Britney Spears lashes out 'Who is my family?' after Dad snags stewardship

Even after she exits a Los Angeles psychiatric ward, Britney Spears will face serious questions about her competence to handle both her money and her two small sons.

The manic ex-Mouseketeer was finishing a 72-hour hospital stint arranged by her psychiatrist and loved ones, although it was unclear Saturday if she would be released early Sunday morning.

While she was locked down, her father went to court and gained control of her assets and access to the increasingly irrational pop princess.

The decision to did not sit well with Spears, who flew into a rage inside the UCLA Medical Center's psych ward after discovering her father won his fight to take control of her spiraling life, according to celebrity Web site TMZ.com.

In a profane outburst, Spears promised to battle her parents in court. "Nobody's taking my house," she reportedly screamed. "Who is my family?"

Dad Jamie Spears' triumph may only be temporary - he's due in court Monday with attorney Andrew Wallete for another hearing on whether they should continue as conservators for his troubled daughter.

Under the court decision, he was permitted to hire round-the-clock security for his daughter and bar people from her Los Angeles mansion.

Manager Osama Lutfi, who remains at odds with the singer's parents, was also told to stay away from the singer.

In a separate hearing tomorrow, Britney Spears' lawyers in her custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline were due back in court. The lawyers, after Spears twice refused to appear in court, have asked off the case.

It was unclear if her second hospitalization in a month would change their plans. Lawyer Anne Kiley didn't return a phone call Saturday.

Spears' bizarre antics led a judge to bar her from visiting sons Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1.

There was still a question about when Spears would exit the neuro-psychiatric unit, where she arrived early Thursday with a police escort costing a reported $25,000.

The 72-hour commitment expires early Sunday, although there was a chance her relatives or doctor could petition for Spears to remain hospitalized for an additional period.

Enough Already

Heather Locklear snuffed out any prayers Bon Jovi rocker Richie Sambora had of keeping their marriage together. Yesterday, Locklear called it quits after 11 years and one child, Ava Elizabeth.

The couple was reportedly on the rocks for months, but tried to reconcile at the end of last year. All calls were referred yesterday to her publicist Cece York, who sent out a release stating, "Heather Locklear has filed for divorce from Richie Sambora.

This is a private matter and there will be no further comment at this time."

Britney Gets 'Refocused'

It's been almost two years since Britney Spears first fell for the elusive charms of Kevin Federline, and since then she's gone from a hard-working pop pinup to a schlumpy homebody. Now, four months after the arrival of chubby-cheeked Sean Preston, the Britster may be preparing to make some changes.

A posting on her official fan club site -- where a mere $24.98-a-year subscription fee gets you such must-have Britney bonuses as access to advanced ticket sales, even though she hasn't been on tour for more than a year -- trumpets the arrival of a "remixed, re-inspired and refocused" Spears.

But is Britney's "new chapter" little more than a one-shot appearance on a show destined for the primetime scrap heap?

"Access Hollywood" reports that Mrs. Federline will become the latest in an endless parade of guest stars who have attempted (and mostly failed) to prove their comedic chops on NBC's soon-to-be-put-out-to-pasture "Will & Grace" (the sitcom's best celebrity cameo: Matt Damon; the worst: a tie between Madonna and Demi Moore -- not that we watch or anything).

An insider says the deal has been inked and Spears, who reportedly coveted the Daisy Duke role in "Dukes of Hazzard" that eventually went to Razzie-nominated Jessica Simpson, will go before the cameras next month. She'll play a Christian conservative talk show host who gets some schooling from Will (Eric McCormack) and Jack (Sean Hayes). The episode will air April 13.
And for those hoping Britney's "new chapter" would begin without her "PopoZao"-spouting hubby (and you know who you are), we have bad news: The rumor-plagued pair put in a lovey-dovey appearance at a post-SAG Awards soiree Sunday night (because when we think achievement in acting, we think of the stars of the craptacular "Chaotic").

The scrubbed-up Federlines, who ditched their usual uniform of unbound, someone-could-put-an-eye-out cleavage (her) and baggy, saggy he-capris and white tank top (him) for a '80s prom dress and ill-fitting suit, made the scene at a People magazine bash, where they "cutely nuzzled" in a bodyguard-surrounded corner booth, reports Teen People.

Britney bopped along to the music before hitting the dance floor with her former backup-hoofer hubby, shaking her semi-retired moneymaker to the Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha" and Madonna's "Holiday."

But the down-market duo reportedly decided to pack things in early, exiting the shindig at 11:30 and heading home to baby Sean.

Jolie & Pitt

Follow the Overheard: The supersnooper stars of the week have to be the folks at Star magazine, who "lucked into" having a reporter lounging at the empty Hotel Bel-Air bar when Angelina Jolie breezed in for a meeting with director Robert Rodriquez (Spy Kids, Sin City).

The mag's fly on the wall overheard Rodriguez pitching a job to Angelina (and offering to create a role for Brad just to sweeten the deal). While she didn't exactly pass on the unknown project (we're hoping it's Mr. & Mrs. Smith vs. Spy Kids, Angelina did stall, citing her ballooning midsection. Rodriguez, proud papa to five of his own, couldn't resist the small talk and asked her how many kids she and Brad planned to have. "Thirteen," she said. "But we're going to adopt the rest.

I can't stand to be pregnant again, and that's how many we want. And I sure as hell ain't squeezing those out." Also, if eavesdroppers can be believed, Angelina went on to say (among other things): The baby is due June 6 (though Us Weekly says it's May 2); she and Brad will never get married because they've both been scarred by divorce; and she'll have a C-section if the baby is more than a few days late (on the advice of her mother, Marcheline Bertrand.)

In a sidebar from a second snooper, Brad says he and Angie are planning to get married "very soon." Which means there's either big trouble brewing, or Mr. and Mrs. Smith have mounted a misinformation campaign that would do the CIA proud.

“I MAY be a bad example for others. In any case, just ignore who the singer is but listen to what he has to say in the songs...”

That came straight from the heart of Jamal Abdillah during a session with the Press recently after he received a double platinum disc award for his latest album Aku Penghibur that has chalked up sales of over 55,000 units, just two months after its release.

In fact, it was more like a plea, and it seemed one that really touched those who were there.
Despite the ‘awkwardness’, it must be said that it’s much easier to get up close and personal with Jamal these days. He seemed more friendly, talkative and quite generous with his smile that day.

Such a welcome change from the earlier days when he was more of an elusive guy. At one time, he seemed to have preferred to keep things to himself. He hardly warmed up to journalists during Press conferences.

Of course, the continuous adulation showered by his loyal and forgiving fans who simply accept him as he is, serves as the real reason why Jamal is still very much around today.

Jamal’s openness about his struggle to come out clean – which is often hard and challenging – is all the more reason why the Press has been treating him with more respect.

So, Jamal is always spared as the Press is more focused on his singing rather than being judgemental on his shortcomings.

“This is my 26th year with Warner Music. I take this opportunity to apologise to all in the company for any trouble I may have caused them, like making them wait for me and also putting up with my erratic mood swings,” he said with a wry smile.

Jamal is still selling albums and shows until today, unlike many of his peers who had vanished.
He attributed putting full focus on what he does as the secret of his longevity.

Jamal, who got his big break after winning the Bintang RTM singing contest back in the early ’70s, is still making waves in the industry.

Last year, in his Raja Pop album, he did a duet with newcomer Sarah Raisuddin in a reworked version of Sandarkan Pada Kenangan.

It was a master stroke, re-establishing the song as a karaoke favourite and helping the album sell over 130,000 copies.

While Raja Pop was a compilation album of sorts, Aku Penghibur is filled with handpicked classic Malay covers, including a few made popular by Indonesian crooners.
“I truly enjoy singing. Hopefully, the bad habit which has become a stigma in my life will serve as a good lesson for all the listeners to avoid,” he said.

Indeed, at the ceremony held at the Putra World Trade Centre, Jamal took the opportunity to thank among others one Haji Yunus Pathi and PENGASIH (a drug rehabilitation centre) before enthralling the guests with his trademark macho voice singing songs from Aku Penghibur album.

Besides performing the upbeat Oh Di Mana Mustika Hati composed by Ahmad Nawab (the music guru responsible for grooming Jamal during his early days) and recorded by Datuk Sharifah Aini, Jamal also belted out the infectious Gadis Melayu (originally sung by Singaporean Othman Hamzah) accompanied by four kebaya clad models.

The showcase continued with seasoned musician S. Atan on keyboards where Jamal gave the crowd goosebumps with his deep and manly vocals through songs like Bunga Pujaan, Kasih Ibu, Hurt and Seroja, one of the more popular cuts in Aku Penghibur.

Interestingly, Jamal proved time and again not only his versatility but how adventurous he can be by taking on difficult love ballads like Indonesian Kris Dayanti’s Mencintainmu, Zaiton Sameon’s Menaruh Harapan and Siti Nurhaliza’s Aku Cinta Padamu.

Other songs included in his new album are the late Broery Marantika’s disco number Malam Minggu Yang Mesra, the title track popularised by the late Sudirman Arshad, Alleycats’ Berita Dari Rantau and Lagu Gembira (recorded by the late Eddie Ahmad and Hamidah Atan) which is given a new breath by Jamal’s duet with Ning Baizura.

Jamal said he needed much convincing by the album’s producer Fauzi Marzuki to deliver ‘female songs’ and make them his own.

“It’s a big risk when you’re asked to re-record hit songs like Aku Cinta Pada Mu and Mencintaimu by top-notch singers. The least you could do is give your best and try to be as good as the original if not better,” he said.

Besides his tight schedule performing dinner shows, Jamal is all set to record his next studio album filled with new songs and scheduled for release next year.

On a more personal note, life’s been good to Jamal. He’s looking forward to rebuilding his life after some failed relationships in the past. The 46-year-old singer did not dismiss the idea of him re-marrying if he found the right woman, attributing the pressure of life to his second divorce four years ago.

As a result of his second union, Jamal has a three-and-a-half-year-old son, Osama Yamani, who is being taken care of by his dad in Perak.

The boy is currently the apple of his eye and Jamal would do anything for him.
“I try to visit Osama as often as I can whenever I’m free from my singing engagements. He’s the only child I have for now and that’s the reason I’m working extra hard,” he said.
Jamal has also taken the trouble to adapt to all the changing moods and nuances of the entertainment industry.

Faced with the Akademi Fantasia (AF) craze as well as the ‘Tsu
-Mawi wave’, Jamal chose to ride the current rather than go against it. Jamal observed that Mawi, the AF3 champion, helped introduce and promote songs in Aku Penghibur when he sang Gadis Melayu (at one of the AF3 weekly shows) and Seroja during the finals.

“In a way, I’m reaping the profits from the brisk sales of my album after Mawi sang them. I must say that Mawi is a blessed singer who is lucky to be so well-loved by almost everybody,” he said.

Mawi has also sung with Jamal at a few dinner shows and loves to perform the latter’s evergreen hit songs.

So much so that the newcomer has been touted as a potential successor to Jamal.
“No, I don’t feel threatened at all,” laughed Jamal. “Not if he really deserves it. For me, when there’s a friendly rival like Mawi, I’ll strive even harder to maintain my popularity and perform better than before.”
